MICROSOFT OFFICE 97 SERVICE RELEASE 1 PATCH INSTALLATION README FILE

(c) 1997 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

The Microsoft (R) Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) patch is a utility designed to upgrade your Office 97 installation in-place by updating only those files that have changed in SR-1. The patch contains the most significant enhancements in SR-1, including the Word 6.0/95 Binary Converter for Word 97 and the Outlook Internet Mail Enhancement patch.

The SR-1 patch is designed to upgrade the U.S. English versions of Office 97 Professional Edition, Office 97 Standard Edition, Office 97 Small Business Edition, and the individual Office 97 standalone products. Note that the SR-1 patch is not designed to upgrade localized versions of these products.

CONTENTS:
INSTALLING THE SERVICE RELEASE 1 PATCH

The Office 97 SR-1 patch utility is a self-contained executable file consisting of only the changes made to Office files in Office 97 SR-1. When you run the patch utility, it finds the Office 97 files on your computer, writes the SR-1 changes to those files, and then makes appropriate changes to your Windows Registry.

The SR-1 patch is available on the World Wide Web, compact disc, and floppy disk. For information on how to obtain the patch utility, connect to the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release web site.

Installing the SR-1 Patch On a User Computer

NOTE: The SR-1 patch only upgrades computers that have Office 97 installed locally. If you are running Office 97 from a network server, you must use the SR-1 Enterprise Update to upgrade your computer. You must also use the SR-1 Enterprise Update to upgrade an Office 97 administrative installation point. To copy the SR-1 patch to your local hard disk, and then run the utility:
  1. Close any open Windows applications.
  2. If installing from the World Wide Web, connect to the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release web site.
    http://www.microsoft.com/office/office97/servicerelease/

If installing from a CD-ROM, insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive.

If installing from floppy disks, insert disk 1 in drive A or B.

  3. For a computer running Microsoft Windows 95(R) or Microsoft Windows NT(R) Workstation 4.0, copy the SR1Off97.exe file to your hard disk. To run the patch utility, click Run on the Start menu, and then type path\SR1Off97.exe with the appropriate command-line options.

For a computer running Windows NT Workstation 3.51, copy the SR1Off97.exe file to your hard disk. To run the patch utility, click Run on the Program Manager or File Manager File menu, and then type path\SR1Off97.exe with the appropriate command-line options.

See Using Command-Line Options later in this document for information about the various command-line options you can use with the patch utility.

  4. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
  5. If prompted, reboot the computer to complete the process.
Similarly to Office 97 Setup, you can have users run the patch utility themselves, or you can automate the process using the same techniques described in Chapter 6, "Customizing Client Installations," in the Office 97 Resource Kit. The patch utility supports the /Q command-line option, which runs the utility without any prompts to the user. By using this option, the patch can be installed without user intervention.

The 7 MB file (SR1Off97.exe) is actually an installer program that contains the patch utility and associated files in a compressed format. When you run the installer program (SR1Off97.exe), it expands to approximately 12 MB on your hard disk, including the patch program itself, Off97SR1.exe.

By default, the installer program copies the files into a temporary folder that is deleted when the patch utility finishes the upgrade process. You can specify a different destination folder using the /T command-line option. You can also use the /C command-line option to direct the installer program to only copy the files to the temporary folder where you can run the patch program (Off97SR1.exe) separately.

Uninstalling Office 97 and the SR-1 Patch

To uninstall Office 97 and the SR-1 patch from your computer:
  1. Close any open Windows applications.
  2. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. In Windows NT Workstation 3.51, double-click Control Panel in the Program Manager.
  3. In the Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Double-click Microsoft Office 97, SR-1 Patch.
Office 97 and all changes made by the patch utility are removed, and the computer is returned to its previous state.

Using Command-Line Options

The patch utility recognizes the following command-line options:

Option Description

Q Quiet mode, no user prompts are given.

/T:path Changes the default temporary folder to path. The installer uses the specified temporary folder for expanding files. The folder contents are not deleted when the patch program is finished.

/C Extract files to the folder specified by the /t option, but do not run the patch program.

To use command-line options with the patch utility:

  1. If you are using the patch from the Web, then download the SR1Off97.exe file to your hard disk without running it. If you are using the patch from CD or floppy disk, you may run the program from the original media or copy it to your hard disk first.
  2. For Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0, click Run on the Start menu, and then type path\SR1Off97.exe with the appropriate command-line options.

    or

For Windows NT Workstation 3.51, click Run on the Program Manager or File Manager File menu, and then type path\SR1Off97.exe with the appropriate command-line options.

For example, if you have downloaded the patch installer to folder c:\Temp, then to run the installer with no user prompts, type

    c:\Temp\SR1Off97.exe /q

SR-1 Patch Log File

The patch utility records a log of all the actions it takes. The log file is named 97sr1_0.txt and is created in the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder. If the patch utility is run more than once, additional log files are created with the names 97sr1_1.txt, 97sr1_2.txt, and so forth.
